February, 2008 Archives

My daughter, Celeste, at 2 months old, wrapped in a blanket passed down to her from her Great Grandmother.

It’s hard to believe she’s 2 months old already.

She smiles now and it will absolutely break your heart if you see it. Every morning on the days where I’m either lucky enough to work from home or manage to put off going into work until she wakes up I hear her stirring in bed and I watch her waiting for her eyes to open. As soon as they do I say to her, “Good morning, Punkin! Where are my morning smiles?”. On queue, she gives me the biggest smile you’ve ever seen.

what sweet clarity!
over fifty years ago
a choice was made:
take up root here!
take up root together!

each lengthening branch
has seen the same sun rise
and the same sun set
with each passing day.
each day growing closer.
each day choosing again
the same for tomorrow.

The creation of a photograph is often an active process. I push myself harder and harder to try concepts and ideas that might fail entirely for the small chance that they just might succeed. Other times, photography is relaxing therapy. It’s something I do to ensure that I have absolutely nothing else to do. In these times I’m more content to just let each moment flow into the next with only a heightened sense of observation.

This image was taken in one of those later cases. What started out as just another beautiful evening in front of a cloudless sunset turned into something entirely different when I was suddenly struck with the notion to toss a single small stone into the lake in front of me.

This is that result.

I’m not generally a big fan of Tone Mapped images. However, with the new ability to easily produce a 9 exposure bracket, it had to be tested at least once.

I tried to photograph the sunrise last Sunday morning. Thanks to the rain, there was no real sunrise to speak of. Not all was lost though. I got this image and I got to spend some quality time with my new mistress and use her to take this image.

That’s right, after 4 years with my D70, I’ve upgraded to the D300. So far, it’s quite nice.

I’m not a subscriber to the thought process that I have to have the biggest and best equipment the moment it is available. In fact, I think that outstanding photographs can be made with even the most basic equipment. This is the reason I’ve had my D70 for so long. I’d probably still have my D100 if it hadn’t been stolen forcing me to buy the D70 in the first place. But… it was just time.

It was a lot more expensive than I’d thought though. So, in support of this site and its continued operation, please consider puchasing a print. If there’s an image of mine that you’d like that you don’t see there. Let me know and I’ll get it put up.

This bridge is Hwy 377 crossing over Lake Texoma / the Red River, which separates Texas from Oklahoma at it’s North Border. The far shore is Texas.

Beaches are few and far between in this part of Texas. Given that, this is probably one of my favorites.
